I still remember when Clifton Elementary School was shuttered over the near-unanimous objections of the community, and the faulty processes and data used to justify this decision. Ten years later, there is no doubt that there was little reason for the closure. From a practical standpoint, closing a school while the surrounding schools were already at capacity defied basic commonsense. Today, the property is used as a school bus parking lot and the facility is not being used to its highest and best potential.
There is no question that the School Board needs to revisit this decision. It’s not about rehashing the past. It’s about doing whats right and fair for the Clifton community. I fully support the reopening of Clifton Elementary School. Clifton Elementary was the crowning jewel in the FCPS elementary-level educational system, and a bustling community center. Its closing was unjustified, its reopening is essential.
